Secrets of the Ledger, Michele Walter, Frances Frederick Exhibition Reception

Join us on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 5:00PM -7:00PM for a reception celebrating the Secrets of the Ledger, Michele Walter, Frances Frederick exhibitions!

Delve into the secrets of a 1820s general store, run by William Kyle in downtown Christiansburg. Recreated and researched using the ledger book carefully penned in Kyle’s complex script, the ledger opens a portal into how those in Christiansburg lived in the 1820s. This exhibition uses information from the ledger to analyze and interpret business in the store, the products sold, frequent customers, and occurrences where women and enslaved individuals interacted with the store. Explore the ledger for yourself in this interactive exhibition.

Michele Walter’s new exhibit “Seasons” is showing at the Montgomery Museum of Art and History, 4 East Main Street, Christiansburg. The title refers, in part, to the four seasons of the year as in the two autumn pictures of the trail to the Cascades, but it also references the seasons of life that people experience. As an artist, Walter describes herself as on a journey that takes her through different styles and subjects. She paints landscapes, flowers, animals, and portraits using watercolor, acrylics, pastels, and collage.

Frances Frederick describes herself as a jack of all trades, but a less modest and more accurate description might be a polymath, a person of great and varied learning. She plays the piano and the violin well enough to be in the orchestra of operas. Her forays into the art world encompass not only the two-dimensional art in the new exhibit at the Montgomery Museum, but also weaving and spinning, paper making, Chinese printing, stained glass, pottery, and steel sculpture.
