Secrets of the Ledger, Michele Walter, Frances Frederick Exhibition Reception
Michele Walter’s new exhibit “Seasons” is showing at the Montgomery Museum of Art and History, 4 East Main Street, Christiansburg. The title refers, in part, to the four seasons of the year as in the two autumn pictures of the trail to the Cascades, but it also references the seasons of life that people experience. As an artist, Walter describes herself as on a journey that takes her through different styles and subjects. She paints landscapes, flowers, animals, and portraits using watercolor, acrylics, pastels, and collage.

Aviation Art & History Reception
The Montgomery Museum of Art & History is proud to announce its upcoming history exhibit, "Above: A History of Montgomery County Aviation," generously sponsored by Wing Aviation. This exhibit explores and celebrates the county’s rich legacy in aviation, featuring historic artifacts and stories highlighting the community’s impact on the skies above us.
Montgomery County has long been at the forefront of aviation and aerospace innovation, from the establishment of the aeronautics curriculum at Virginia Tech in 1929 to the role of the Radford Arsenal in rocket fuel development. The region’s contributions to the field continue into the modern era, with the first U.S. commercial drone delivery by Wing, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, taking place in Christiansburg, VA in 2019.
Historic photographs, uniforms, and World War II aviator gloves provide tangible links to the important local contributions to the war effort during the 1940s. Two modern commercial delivery drones and other artifacts will showcase the culmination of the work, research, and innovation produced by the Virginia Tech Mid Atlantic Aviation Partnership, an FAA-designated UAS test site whose research propelled new, safe drone applications such as those used by Wing.
Complementing this historical exhibit is a special art showcase celebrating ‘Flight,’ featuring works by local artists including Richard Allnut, Susan Hansen, Sue Hossack, Susan Lockwood, Jim Marchman, Wayne McKinney, Susan Moffit, Judy Niehaus, Savannah Penven, and Charlie Whitescarver. This art exhibit provides a variety of perspectives and inspiration on the topic of aviation including aerial photography and landscape art.
The exhibit opening and reception will take place on Thursday, September 26, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Montgomery Museum of Art & History, located at 4 East Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073. Guests will enjoy free hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar during the event. This unique celebration of aviation and flight as seen through art and history will serve as a testament to the region’s talents, innovation, and technological advances.

Warm Hearth Village Reception
Warm Hearth Village: 50 Years Connecting our Community
Public Reception: Wednesday, July 31, 5:00 – 7:00 PM
4 East Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073
The Montgomery Museum of Art & History is proud to present its newest history exhibit in partnership with Warm Hearth Village. The exhibit, entitled “Warm Hearth Village: 50 Years of Connecting Our Community,” will explore aspects of its founders, the Kroontje’s innovative work with senior advocacy and care, civic and industry engagement, the 100-Year Plan, and the focus on incorporating nature into senior care. The mission of Warm Hearth Village is to foster a person-centered approach to aging in an inclusive environment that redefines retirement.
Warm Hearth Village founders Wybe & Marietje Kroontje poured their hearts and souls into creating a community that respects both people and nature. They were Dutch immigrants who came to the U.S. after enduring the occupation and oppression of World War II and dreamed of building a retirement community to serve as an expression of gratitude to America for their freedom. A true grassroots effort, they rallied the community around the 100-year plan to build a village where seniors from all walks of life would come together, each contributing their own special talents, ideas and experiences. Officially incorporated in 1974, Warm Hearth Village has been an integral part and valued partner of the New River Valley Community for 50 years. Visit their website at https://retire.org for more details.
“We are delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Warm Hearth Village as a staple in our community. When we present and interpret the region’s history, it is easy to see the profound impact that Warm Hearth has had on Montgomery County with regard to senior care and quality of life,” said Casey Jenkins, the Executive Director of the museum. “We are honored to help tell and share the story of Warm Hearth Village.”
The New River Valley community is invited to join Warm Hearth Village and its supporters on Wednesday, July 31, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM for a free public reception and exhibit opening at the Montgomery Museum of Art & History located at 4 East Main St., Christiansburg, VA. Light refreshments and hors devours will be served, and remarks will take place at 6:00 PM.
