Join us on Thursday, May 23 from 5:00 – 7:00 for “Mail that Baby! Sending Children by Mail and other New River Valley Postal History” Members-Only Talk led by Dr. Bob Hill.
Dr. Bob Hill is a native of Blacksburg and a lifelong local history buff. He grew up walking with his dad on his mail route, learning lessons in geography, organizational skills, and public relations. A stamp collector in his youth, his hobby later grew into an interest in historical letters and postal history. Dr. Hill will discuss the development of the Great Road in Montgomery County and the communities and post offices that followed. He will relay the true story of a child “mailed’ from Florida to Christiansburg in 1915.
He is the author of The New River Mail- A Postal History of Virginia’s Montgomery, Pulaski and Giles Counties which seeks to relate local history through the lives and letters of those who lived in the New River Valley. He is a retired veterinarian who lives in the Shenandoah Valley with his wife and daughter.
