The Palette Art Gallery was, according to a founding member, an attempt “to see good art in every home in this county and state.” Operated by a group of local artists pledged to support the gallery through the sale of their work, it opened in 1961 and is thought to be one of the earliest art galleries in the county. The gallery was located in a modest building a few miles outside of Christiansburg and captured tourist traffic along U. S. 11 prior to the completion of Interstate 81. The Palette Art Gallery helped launch the professional careers of several commercially successful artists including noted painters Vance Miller and P. Buckley Moss. After operating for more than three decades, the gallery closed in 1996.
