Gray Clouds, Black Smoke – Wayne McKinney

Gray Clouds, Black Smoke – Wayne McKinney

I’ve always been an avid amateur photographer with a special interest in trains and aircraft. The images I’ve submitted were taken during two different photo charters: one at the TVRM in Chattanooga, Tn., and the other at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Md.
I retired from Norfolk Southern Corp. in 2012 with 38 ½ years service. I hired in with Southern RR in Chattanooga and worked 22 years there. When the work was moved from there to Roanoke in 1997, I followed the work and have lived in the area since, finishing out my service at Roanoke Locomotive Shops.

My brother and I used to watch trains on the B and O railroad from the porch of a friends house in
Garrett Park Maryland. I admired the dining cars and roomettes on passenger trains and dreamed of
traveling to Chicago. My brother knew all the rail lines, their locations, recognizing the freight cars as
well as passenger cars. He loved trains. He grew up to become an industrial engineer, working on the
New York Central, the Penn Central and the Metro North Commuter Railroad. He realized his train
dream. When I photograph trains, I do it in his memory.

I enjoyed researching and looking for trains that fit the railroad theme and even possibly the historic
Cambria depot theme. This was my first effort working on locomotives and I hope I did them justice.

I think the best way to record history of any kind is through writing and visual media that does not
require power to view. Since I cannot draw or paint very well I have concentrated on photography.
Digital files are too fragile, easily lost, unlike negative and slides. I still have all my negatives and slides
from before I acquired my first digital camera. Digital photography has made it possible for more photo
to be taken, but most are lost eventually. Print them when you want to really save them.

Switchback Reflections – Carl Lefko

Switchback Reflections – Carl Lefko

Following his retirement in 2019, Carl has continued his lifelong love for gardening and wood working.
In pursuit of increased sustainability, he added beekeeping to his list of hobbies. His interest in
photography began early working with his father in a makeshift darkroom in the family bathroom
developing film and making prints. As a theatrical designer Carl has maintained a strong interest in
the aesthetics of composition and light found in nature, art, and architecture. This passion is reflected
in his photography where he strives to capture the unique moments in time and space. It is no
coincidence that Carl began using this skill to begin taking production photos for the RU Theatre
Department 1983 and continues as the production photographer in retirement.
